Institute of Indian Studies, Humanities Korea Plus Project Team (HK+) at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) hosted a special lecture by Professor Travis L. Smith from Seoul National University on June 14th (Mon.). The title of the lecture was “Principles of Pleasure: Ethics and Aesthetics in the Kāmasūtra”

Vātsyāyana’s Kāmasūtra, regarded as paradigmatic textbook for sex in the third century C.E., is centered on sophisticated practical techniques in a straightforward manner. However, it is based on Aesthetics and has ideological consistency. The lecture will show examples of Aesthetic aspects in Vātsyāyana's text emphasizing its correlation with the erotic experience.

Travis L. Smith is a Professor of Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations at Seoul National University. He conducted graduate work in Sanskrit language and South Asian religions at the University of California, Berkeley and Columbia University (Ph.D.). He taught at the University of Florida and his major research interest is on the role of the Sanskrit Purāṇas in initial development of Hindu. His recent work ‘Kāśīkhaṇḍa(an extensive literary panegyric praising the ancient pilgrimage city of Varanasi)’ is ready to be published.

More than 30 participants attended this special lecture.
