Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Institute of Indian Studies (Director Chan Wahn Kim: Professor of India and ASEAN Studies at Graduate School of International and Areas Studies) HK+ project team holds its 22nd Colloquium at Institute of Indian Studies Youtube Channel(https://www.youtube.com/hkindia/) on the topic of “Sociocultural Significance and Function of Hindi Dowry Custom” on May 29th, 2020.

Dowry(Kanyadan) has been a custom of Braman since the ancient times and had spread to other castes, but now it is accused as typical bad custom for giving unbearable economic pressure on the brides’ sides. The case of a girl Snehalata who burned herself due to dowry around hundred years ago has already caused hot social controversy, and the words “dowry murder,” “burning bride,” “evil dowry,” and such has become an everyday vocabulary for thousands of brides are murdered or killing themselves every year because of the conflicts on dowry. Although social organizations including women’s organizations have acted on dowry abolition movements since 1960s and the law forbidding dowry was enacted, the dowry custom not just refused to disappear or decrease, but rather shows a tendency of dissemination.

In this colloquium, we try to understand this phenomenon of this custom’s spreading despite of numerous criticism, abolition movement, and legal sanctions by looking at the sociocultural significance and function of dowry in Hindi marriage. Those of you interested are welcome to join.
