Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Institute of Indian Studies (Director: Chan Wahn Kim: Professor at Graduate School of International and Areas Studies) HK+ team holds the 23rd colloquium on 2020 June 26th online. Researcher Choi Wonho(HUFS) received his doctorate at EPHE on the topic of Won Hyo’s idea of ‘one mind’ and continues to research and publish on Won Hyo and Eastern and Western philosophy, and is lecturing on Eastern Philosophy and East-West Comparative Philosophy at University.
In this colloquium, the topic of “Mutual Study on Concept of Purusha in Upanishads and One Mind in Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana: With Focus on Ubiquity and Simultaneity” will be discussed.
What is ‘mind’? It is a basis for going anywhere and seeing anything. As it is the basis for everything, we can move towards restrictions or freedom, depending on how we use our minds. Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana of Asvaghosa weaves the relationship between restriction and freedom in sophisticated ways through a philosophical concept of “two gates.” “Two gates” are Jinyeomun as a world of true freedom and Saengmeolmun as a reality as restriction. And ‘mind’ can move between two worlds without any hindrance. It is ‘mind’ as ubiquity and simultaneity spread through whole world. On the other hand, Upanishads expresses the basis for nirvana through ‘purusha’, the one who is widely spread, by symbols and metaphors. By looking closely at the relationship between ‘purusha’ in Upanishad and ‘one mind’ in Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana, we will be able to understand that ‘braman’, ‘atman’, ‘purusha’ are all ‘one’, and further that the meaning of ubiquity of ‘purusha’ has settled its status as ‘one mind’ in Awakening of Faith in the Mayahana, which is similar to ‘synthesis theory’ in Mayahana Buddhism.
